Summer Sports Doc Series

June 20, 2012 Leave a comment

Summer, at least according to the calendar and not to mother nature, is upon us tomorrow. The NBA finals and CWS will be over within the next week, and baseball will be heading into the MLB All-Star break soon. Unless you are into watching re-runs of Sportscenter or the 2010 Pool trick shot competition, the TV won’t be cutting it until we watch Michael Phelps swim for gold in London.

I need to fill that gap. “But with what, Taylor?” I’m glad you asked. Sports documentaries!

We are all familiar with ESPN’s award winning ’30 for 30′ series. “The Two Escobars” was amazing! “The Marinovich Project” was quite intriguing. “Roll Tide/War Eagle” made me still dislike both teams. But since no new ESPN docs will hit the TV screens until the fall, I began looking for other sports documentaries.

With that, I am proud to announce the Summer Sports Doc Series! Every week I will be watching 1 movie and be posting my comments, remarks, and ideas about said videos until July 27th. 5 movies, 5 weeks. Easy task.
Here’s where your help comes in. I have posted the first 2 documentaries below. Why don’t you watch them with me and post your opinions on them as well. It’s a book club, but with movies, and we meet on the internet. No reading, no traveling, no costs (except time)!

This first one can relate to OKC being in the finals and with me living in Seattle currently.

1. Sonicsgate: Exposing the truth behind the Seattle SuperSonics’ tragic exodus after 41 years in the Emerald City
Date of post: June 25

A movie not so much on a sport, but a topic that can be found in all sports.

2. Bigger Stronger Faster*: a 2008 documentary film directed by Christopher Bell about the use of anabolic steroids as performance-enhancing drugs in the United States and how this practice relates to the American Dream.
Date of post: July 2

After these 2 the gates are open. If you have any ideas let me know. Some of my other choices are ‘Undefeated’, ‘Bobby Fischer against the world’, ‘Dogtown and Z-boys‘, ‘The King of Kong: Fistful of Quarters’, and many others. Keep in mind I’m looking for videos that everyone can access (preferably no torrents but we will see) Let me know!

Update for the die-hards.

May 3, 2010 Leave a comment

Taking a break from studying I just wanted to share a couple of things about this long running (8 month) blog.  8 months!? wow.  almost 75%  of the posts happened in the 1st 5 months.

This whole blog will be taking a change of pace in the following months.  We’re not breaking up like the Backstreet Boys, we’re re branding like Hansen.

I (T.O) will be having a new blog starting within the week.  Yes.  Let me explain, courtesy of my new blog’s ‘About’ Section, Modern Man’s Hustle.

This website on the world wide web is going to be version 2.0 of my previous site.  My first one, The Important Things, was originally for me to vent about what bothers me.  I really enjoyed it for the first couple months, when there was no pressure on it.  I LOVED people telling me how they love it and check on it daily.  Making sure people are enjoying what I say/write is priority #1. All that praise made me want to put more up for the people.  It eventually almost turned into a job, trying to post constant stuff on there.  It opened up blogging, however, to Grant and Wes, my partners in crime (and life). Their contributions made it ‘hella tight’ (urban slang), with husker football and movie news. As time goes on, we have found some niches. Grant in the fall will start his own Husker site (or so that’s the plan).  If you haven’t been able to tell from Grant’s writings he is a die-hard Husker fan and can write about it until the proverbial cows come home.  Wes now has a summer job at the Daily Nebraskan, where he doesn’t know what he’s going to do. Being a critic about everything, he will find something there for sure.

We (all of us) will still post videos or random stuff/husker notes on The Important Things randomly throughout the summer Grant stilll has LOADS of stuff to talk about before we start playing football, and there are plenty of videos to show you guys. Especially now that school will be taking a 3 month hiatus.

This new blog will essentially cover two parts: it will cover my summer internship/travels to the Vail, CO area and be a place to post music.  The first part: my job.  This summer I was given the opportunity to work at a golf course in Wolcott, CO.  This 3 month experience will be incredible, not only because it is part of what I want to do, but I am in beautiful CO (sans the CU Buffs).  I am going to bring my camera, and I may even be purchasing a video-camera and record some stuff.  That’s a maybe, though.  The second part is music.  We all encounter it daily, with those white buds in everyones ears.  With the internet, Pandora, and numerous other sites allowing me to scour music, I’ve always though it would be nice to put it in an area, allowing others to look.  Thus, this.  My music tastes are same but different from everyone else.  Growing up listening to country, transition to Radio Disney, then modern hits, now hip-hop/almost underground.  Wiiide area to cover.  My ideal transition from this would be digging for old vinyl and being able to do a little production/mixing.  That’s looking ahead.

So what I want you to do
1)keep coming back here weekly, if not sooner.
2)bookmark my new site and expect some stuff to come up no later than next monday.
3)keep giving us support, whether it be word of mouth, comments, or checking out the site.
4)Have a good summer!

America, welcome to the new era: 3D. We, as Americans, frown upon this 1900s technology known as 2D. We the people want to get nauseous while watching Pro Basketball from our living rooms! We the people want to wear ridiculous (no e in ridiculous, just an FYI) glasses while watching animals jump out at us at bars! We the people…. you get it..

3D has been the talk of the down ever since Avatar blew our minds and stole our wallets in theaters ($1 billion dollars of wallets!) We all knew that this technology was coming sooner or later, as Discovery Channel and ESPN announced a 3D channel coming this summer to a TV near you.

And of course TVs. Lazy America doesn’t want to get out of our seats to watch 3D! Pass the homemade popcorn and ordered Dominoes pizza! Just last week Best Buy announced in their ad the selling of a 3D TV. For over $2,500! Who will every buy such a thing when HDTVs have only been around for a less than a decade? Recession you guys!1!!1!

But now, video games in 3D. Not your PS3 (yet) or 360 (yet, I’m guessing), but your DSi. Yes, Nintendo is first to jump at the ship. 1st it was interactive gaming (Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!) and now 3D games in the palm of your hand. Nintendo has announced that they will be showing of the 3D Nintendo DS at E3 this summer. The Best Part? Pokemon No phony awkward glasses! Yes, the camera built in on the DS will watch your eyes, allowing for a 3D experience.  David Blaine is amazed, you should too.  A Youtube Link to show:

Life’s Breaking Bad when you’re Justified!

March 23, 2010 Leave a comment

3 new shows for you, me and the family in 101B to watch.  Let’s take a look.

1. Breaking Bad, Sundays on AMC

While not a new show (Season 3), it is never too late to start.  Nothing but good things have been said about it.  A High School Chemistry teacher in New Mexico is diagnosed with Lung Cancer, and resorts to the drug world, making and selling meth with a student to keep his financial life afloat.  It has won multiple awards, from Emmys to the SAGS and its only in its 3rd season.

2. Life, Sundays on Discovery.

Planet Earth on drugs.   No, not the actual planet, the show ‘Planet Earth’ from last year is now revamped with more animals, more High Definition cameras, and more epic slow mo.  After watching the last 10 minutes of the first episode, I immediately hit the record on the second.  Watching all these endangered animals and insects wallop around the rain forest makes my jaw drop.

3. Justified, Tuesdays on FX

The series premiere was on last Tuesday, and the two of us (Wes and I) sat down to watch it. The first episode already had a cliffhanger that set up the rest of the season. From Wiki: The series is about U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens, a 19th century-style but modern-day officer based in South Florida, who enforces his brand of justice which puts a target on his back with criminals and puts him at odds with his bosses in the Marshal service. As a result, he gets reassigned to the district covering his rural Eastern Kentucky mining hometown of Harlan County. It deals with racism/southern necks/moonshine/guns, so its a hit already. (1st episode had 4.2 million views)

There you go. Three new shows to add on top of the list of shows you already have so now you can watch TV constantly and be distracted from your homework and other important things.

Music Video Monday

March 22, 2010 Leave a comment

This Music Monday is actually a Music Video,  but the Music is pretty good too.  I recently got my hands on the Greatest Hits of Elton John and have been listening to that while I study for my Test tomorrow over insects (If you need help distinguishing a Brain hormone from a Juvenile Hormone let me know!).  Anyway the video is shot in a one-take format, with your favorite Iron-man as the main character.  Rocket-man and Iron-man, a winning combo.

Lets just say that Lost is slowly becomming better and better as the weeks progress. Why? IT’S ALMOST THE SEASON FINALE! Although we won’t get all the questions answered (How did the dog survive all that time travel? Why is Ben a Jerk? Team Others/Team Oceanic 815?) we can say that this weeks episode will be amazing. Two words: Superhero powers Richard Alpert. Your ageless, eye-liner wearing friend of everyone except for Flocke (Fake Locke! get it? no?) will hopefully reveal all his secrets. Not to spoil anything, I will leave mine (and Wes’) comments off the blog. To hold their place, a .gif and a .jpg (Moving image and picture!)

Get it?! He can't walk in the real world! But he doesn't know what the island is! So he still can't walk! But he's dead! Or is he? My head hurts!

Last Minute NCAA pick’em! Who you got?

March 17, 2010 Leave a comment

Well, Ladies and Gents, its that time of betting year again. 65 (now 64) teams compete in bracket style play to become the 2010 NCAA National Champions. Who will come out on top? The President has picked Kansas to win this year, after picking right last year. Here are some pointers to consider when filling out your last minute bracket.

1. If can’t pick a team, bet on blue. Many stats have shown that teams in blue have had a edge over those not. Kansas, Kentucky, Duke, ‘Nova, West Virginia… just a few teams.

2. Watch out for the Big XII this year. Kansas, being the #1 team, is the edge in this tourney. K-State, the #2 seed, and Baylor, the #3 seed, have been predicted in brackets to go Elite 8, possibly Final 4 material. Although Baylor only runs 7 or 8 players through its rotation, be on the lookout.

3. Don’t expect any big upsets in the first round. out of 400 games, only 6 teams ranked a #13 seed or higher have beaten a #1, #2, #3, or #4 seed. That’s 1.5 games in 100 played.

4. Duke is in the easiest bracket out of all 4. Some consider it an outrage, a conspiracy, but it is entirely up to the NCAA to decide who plays in what tourney. Purdue is overrated due to a late season injury. Syracuse, although 1 seed, has a rookie coach and will do great if they get their injured many back. WVU is on the hot streak right now.

My Bracket (T.O): I had to take some chances. Baylor and WV are my sleeper pics. Kansas is too good not to pick. I’m going to have 3 Big XII teams in my bracket. Like what I said: It’s risky. But you gotta pick it.

Wes’ bracket: I don’t know his rhyme or reason. I know that he likes the name Marquette, and every St. he thinks is Street. He is pretty much going by names, with Nova and Xavier in the final.
